Happy Independence Day! While we celebrate the birth of our nation and the freedoms we cherish, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what freedom means for us as law firm owners. And luckily we don’t even have to worry about joining in the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind and fight off an Alien Invasion. That speech STILL gives me chills every time I hear it even though it’s fake.

So instead…let’s focus on the freedom we SHOULD have as law firm owners.

1. Time Freedom

Imagine having the ability to spend your time how you want, whether it’s taking a vacation, attending your child’s school event, or just enjoying a relaxing day without worrying about the office. Like Bruce Wayne taking time to enjoy life outside of being Batman, time freedom allows you to balance work and personal life effectively.

Small Step: Start by delegating tasks that don’t require your expertise. Use tools like calendars and task management software to schedule dedicated personal time. I know, I know we talk about this a LOT.

2. Financial Freedom

Financial freedom isn’t about being rich; it’s about having control over your finances and the ability to make choices without stress. More Tony Stark getting to mess around and build stuff than Peter Parker having to have a job taking photos of himself.

Small Step: Regularly review your firm’s financial health. Create a budget, monitor expenses, and set financial goals. I will be honest, I am unaware of ANY study that found increased profitability from saving money…so instead let’s invest the savings in growing the top line with more and better marketing.  I just dropped a 20 page, 10 step process to create a marketing plan that is VERY high level, but will be helpful to many. Email me if you want it.

3. Freedom to Innovate

Just as Hawkeye (or Green Arrow) creates new arrowheads to help in situations, law firm owners should have the freedom to innovate and implement new ideas. This could mean adopting new technologies, exploring different practice areas, or developing unique marketing strategies.

Small Step: Allocate time each week to brainstorm and research new ideas. Encourage your team to contribute suggestions and be open to experimenting with new approaches.  AND/OR allocate time each week to ACTUALLY implement these ideas and changes that you’ve put off forever (you know who you are).

4. Freedom to Choose Clients

One of the perks of running your own firm is the ability to choose who you work with. Like the Ninja Turtles choosing their allies, you don’t have to team up with every hockey mask wearing vigilante or take every case that comes your way.

Small Step: Dan Sullivan calls this “Always Be Buying.” Even when you are doing the consultation, think about if you want to “buy” this case (or this person’s problem).  Develop a clear profile of your ideal client. Set criteria for the types of cases you want to handle and be firm in your decision to accept only those that align with your firm’s goals and values.

I tell law firm owners to look at it like a dartboard.  Focus on the bullseye (the ideal cases). Be fine getting the cases one rung outside of that…be on the fence about two rungs…and skip anything that hits the wall off the board.

5. Freedom from Overwork

Overwork is the villain in many lawyers’ lives. Like Frodo carrying the One Ring, the burden can be overwhelming. Achieving freedom from overwork involves building a team you trust and creating systems that allow you to step back.

Small Step: Begin by identifying tasks that can be automated or delegated. Invest in training your team so they can handle responsibilities independently.  And/or just start saying NO more.  I have NEVER spoken to someone who raised their rates and was worse off for it.  If you doubled your prices right now and lost 49% of your cases you would still make more money, and have more time for yourself, your team, AND your clients.

6. Freedom to Lead

As a law firm owner, your role should evolve from doing all the work to leading and guiding your team. Think of Professor X leading the X-Men—your job is to provide vision and direction, not to be involved in every detail.

Small Step: Develop leadership skills through courses or coaching. Focus on building a strong, supportive culture within your firm where your team feels valued and empowered.  Empowering them to make the smaller decisions and still hit their KPIs!

7. Personal Freedom

Ultimately, the goal is to achieve personal freedom where you have the liberty to pursue your passions and interests outside of work. Whether it’s traveling like Indiana Jones or spending time with family like The Incredibles, personal freedom is the culmination of all the other freedoms.

Small Step: Set personal goals and schedule time for hobbies, travel, and relaxation. Remember, personal freedom is about living a fulfilling life, not just working non-stop.  And I PROMISE you…you can do fun things with potential referral sources, post about the fun things on social media, get involved and meet new people while doing the fun things…and have any or all of those things lead to you ALSO getting more cases and running a better business.

Conclusion

As we celebrate Independence Day, should we be victorious today the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American Holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice…we will NOT go silently into the night, we will not vanish without a fight, we are going to live on, we are going to survive, today we celebrate…

CHILLS…just from me remembering it.  But enough of President Bill Pullman.

Take a moment to reflect on these freedoms and how you can incorporate them into your life as a law firm owner. Small steps can lead to significant changes, allowing you to build a firm that not only thrives but also gives you the freedom you deserve.  If you need help with this – I am right here.

Until then, keep your cape ready and your spirit free!
