What do toxic clients, The Phantom Menace, and that one text from your ex at 2am have in common?

You know you shouldn’t go there… and yet, sometimes you do.

“Sure, I’ll take on this client who already had three lawyers and says everyone else was an idiot.”
“Yeah, this person’s yelling at my receptionist, but they’re probably just having a rough day…”
“Did they just try to negotiate the rate before the consult? …Okay, deep breath.”

We’ve all been there. We’ve all seen the red flags.
And most of us have still said, “Eh, maybe it’ll be fine.”

Spoiler alert: It’s never fine.

Cut to three months later:

So let’s talk about client red flags — and why ignoring them is a first-class ticket to burnout island.

7 Client Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore

  1. They bad-mouth every past professional they’ve worked with.
Guess who’s next on that list? (It’s you.)
  2. They want to skip your process.
“Can I just call your cell instead of filling out that form?” — 🚨 RUN.
Your process exists because you have a system so you can run a great business and have a better life.
  3. They speak in vague threats.
“I just expect a certain level of attention…” → Cool. But this isn’t Succession, and I’m not your emotionally damaged fixer.
  4. They email at 11pm and text again at 7am.
    This one’s self-explanatory. You are not 7-Eleven.
  5. They treat your team like trash.
If they’re rude to your receptionist, they’ll be worse to your paralegal. And eventually to you. Or they will be weirdly nice to you and still treat your staff like trash…either is WRONG.  Pro-tip – the best holiday gift you can give, is letting everyone at the firm fire their least favorite client (and don’t be surprised when the same name comes up multiple times)
  6. They want to be your only client.
The kind of person who emails 12 times between the consult and retainer is not going to get less needy as the case goes on…
  7. They want a discount. Before even hearing your price.

You could offer them a golden briefcase and they’d still want it BOGO.

But Jordan, What If I Need the Money?

I get it. We’ve all taken the occasional red flag when cash flow got tight.
But here’s the problem: bad clients don’t just waste your time — they poison your energy.

They make you:

I hate that the squeaky wheel gets the grease (throw some love on your great clients)…but bad clients prevent you from having the time to do ANYTHING above and beyond for ANYONE.  They’re expensive. And I don’t just mean in billable hours.

When in doubt ask:

Would I still want to work with this person if the money was cut in half?

If the answer is no…you’ve got your answer.

Wrapping It Up

Your firm is not a charity for the emotionally volatile.
You don’t need every client. You need the right clients.
You need the ones who:

Say no to the wrong ones, and you’ll make space for the people who are actually a joy to work with. (Yes, those exist.)

Make sure you’re focusing on clients you actually WANT to work with.  Market to them, speak their language, put in friction points to scare away the red flags, and when they do sneak through, make like Elsa and let (them) go!
