What do TikTok, Jar Jar Binks, and your unread email tab have in common?
They all show up uninvited and ruin your focus.
I used to think I was really productive — until I realized I had 17 tabs open, 3 active notifications, 2 podcasts queued up, and somehow I was also checking out hilarious restaurant reviews including a Little Ceasar’s employee punching someone who tried to hit a customer because they’re “always hot and ready.”
Spoiler alert: I wasn’t working. I was clicking.
(And also possibly doomscrolling… but it felt productive because I had my calendar open in the background and was not behind there.)
Let’s be honest: distraction is the default now.
And focus?
Focus is a superpower.
Why You’re Not Distracted — You’re Being Hijacked
Your brain isn’t broken.
You’re not lazy.
You’re just up against an algorithm that literally makes more money every time you lose focus.
Apps are built to pull you back in.
Emails trigger dopamine hits.
Notifications are engineered interruptions.
So if you feel like you can’t focus anymore…
You’re not imagining it.
You’re outnumbered.
There are hundreds of people spending thousands of hours trying to pull you in. Attention is the greatest resource for so many platforms now. So until we can create a perfect clone of ourselves who gets to do the work, while we enjoy the scrolling, we need some small tweaks to get our focus back.
5 Ways to Reclaim Your Focus (Before It Gets Bought Out by Meta)
- Turn off every notification (except emergencies).
No one needs to know you got a new follower at 3:12pm. That’s not urgent. That’s dopamine spam. The new Marvel movie trailer will be there tomorrow…I may or may not have said to myself 1,000 times… - Create “deep work” blocks like they’re court hearings.
Put it on your calendar. No calls. No Slack. No excuses. If Yoda can stay on Dagobah for decades while a Death Star is built and blown up, you can put in 30-60 minutes without distractions. - Batch shallow tasks.
Email. Social. Admin. Set a timer, do them all at once, and move on. Don’t let them bleed into your whole day like slow WiFi rage. - Use tech to beat tech.
Apple’s Screen Time settings can help you block distractions… or at least guilt trip you with a popup that says, “Do you really need to open Instagram again?” - Give your brain a buffer.
Stop jumping from Zoom calls to Slack to court to email without breaks. You’re not a robot. Take 5 minutes to breathe, stretch, or stare at a plant like a weirdo. I changed my hour meetings to 50 minutes (and my 30 minute ones to 25…) life changing for the days where I am back to back to back to back to back to back like some cross between Office Space and Human Centipede.
The ROI of Focus? Freedom.
- You get more done in less time.
- You feel less overwhelmed.
- You stop working 10-hour days that only include 3 hours of actual work.
- And maybe most importantly… you can be present for the people you actually care about.
Your ability to focus is one of the last unfair advantages left.
Guard it like it’s your job.
Because technically… it is.
Wrapping It Up
You don’t need more hacks. You need less noise.
You don’t need 7 new systems. You need 1 solid hour of thinking time.
And you definitely don’t need another notification.
You need space. You need silence. You need a chance to go deep.
Until then…let it go (when it is another notification or distraction).
