What do a Netflix binge, a pile of nachos, and your neglected business systems have in common?
They all feel great…until they don’t.
Let’s talk about that moment where you finally get a break — you throw on a show (probably something you’ve already seen 3 times…I tend to rotate comedies: The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, How I Met Your Mother), crush a mountain of nachos (pro-tip: cheese under AND over the toppings because you deserve it), and feel like, “Ahh yes, this is what freedom tastes like.”
And it’s awesome.
Until you come to 5 hours later and don’t recall a single thing from the shows.
Get the scale later and regret nacho week (hey, if Sharks have a week…so should nachos!)
Check your phone and find 1,000 emails of different fires at the business…
If that’s what is happening then — that’s not rest. That’s avoidance covered in a nice Mexican cheese blend.
The Nacho Trap
Here’s how it happens:
- You’re burned out from putting out fires all day.
- You don’t have the energy to fix the deeper issues.
- So you check out for a bit (Netflix).
- You treat yourself (nachos).
- You ignore the real problem (neglect).
Rinse. Repeat. Regret. But we can break this cycle. I know we can, because I did it and you can too!
The Real Cost of Comfort
Comfort isn’t the enemy — it’s the timing of it.
When you collapse onto the couch because you have nothing left in the tank, that’s survival.
When you sit down because you’ve earned it — because the business is running, the team is aligned, and you planned for this rest — that’s freedom.
The difference? Systems. Boundaries. A business that runs without you having to duct-tape everything together. So here we go – my top 5 systems that turn survival into thrive..thrival…thriving?
1. Intake That Qualifies (and Filters)
Why it matters: Your time is too valuable to spend on people who aren’t a fit.
What to systematize:
- A pre-call form that screens for the best fits (practice area, geographic area, no red flags…
- A booking form that prevents 1000 email back and forths only to find out someone is in a different time zone.
- A CRM/automation tool (like Lawmatics) that handles follow-up
Time saved: 3 hours? 10 hours? Your last remaining nerve?
2. Calendar Control = Boundary Protection
Why it matters: If your calendar is a free-for-all, your energy will be too.
What to systematize:
- No unscheduled calls — ever. So set rules for booking forms even if you or your EA is booking things with them.
- Pre-set client check-in windows (so they know when to expect you and you don’t play phone tag). Protip-block schedule these. If you book all your client check ins for Friday afternoon they will probably take less time.
- Buffer zones for deep work and lunch (yes, you’re allowed to eat, you’re even allowed to eat nachos!)
Time saved: Hours of context switching and decision fatigue. Seriously some studies have found it takes over 22 minutes to fully switch from one task to another.
3. Email Triage with Rules and Responses
Why it matters: Your inbox should not be your to-do list.
What to systematize:
- Filters and labels for sorting (clients, team, sales, etc.). Don’t just throw them into a black hole like in Interstellar.
- Canned responses for common questions. Google now allows these templates native to the platform.
- Auto-forwarding to the right team member when you’re not needed
Time saved: 30–90 minutes per day (plus fewer rage-scrolls)
4. Billing and Collections That Don’t Rely on You
Why it matters: You can’t scale if you have to chase every dollar.
What to systematize:
- Automated billing + payment plans
- Scheduled follow-ups for overdue invoices
- Scripts and SOPs for your team to own collections (not you). I care…I say yes…I give everyone more time or a lower payment and then our cashflow sucks…but my employees say that’s nice and we wish we could help, but we aren’t allowed to…
Time saved: Weeks of awkward conversations and delayed cash
5. Delegation via SOPs and Weekly Check-Ins
Why it matters: If your brain is the business, you’re not the CEO — you’re the bottleneck.
What to systematize:
- Weekly check-in meetings with clear agenda
- SOPs for repeatable tasks (intake, client updates, marketing)
- Project management tools (like Clio, ClickUp or Trello) so you don’t live in your email
Time saved: Every week forever.
Wrapping It Up
I love nachos. I love Netflix. But I love being present, rested, and free even more.
Build the systems.
Set the boundaries.
Design a life where comfort is a core component — not an escape hatch.
Here’s to living a life you don’t have to escape from and owning a business that gives you the freedom you deserve!
