Stop Using AI Like a Toy What do Tony Stark, Clippy (yes, the paperclip), and the law firm owner who just “quickly” opened their laptop at 9:47 p.m. have in common?
It’s not that all three have a healthy relationship with sleep. Instead, it’s about AI that actually works for your firm so you can have a life.
Tony had Jarvis. Clippy had… confidence. And you have 47 tabs open, 19 drafts of the same email, and a calendar that looks like a Tetris game you’re losing (I can’t be alone with this, right?)
The promise of AI is simple: do the annoying stuff faster so you can do the meaningful stuff better… then go be a human again.
The problem is that most lawyers are using AI like it’s a fancy espresso machine they never learned to operate. Lots of buttons. Big dreams. Still somehow drinking burnt coffee.
So let’s talk about how to use AI in a way that actually reduces your workload instead of adding “AI babysitter” to your job description.
The Lie We Tell Ourselves
“I’ll use AI when I have time to learn it.”
That’s like saying, “I’ll start working out once my knees stop making Rice Krispies noises.”
If you wait until you “have time,” you’ll adopt AI around the same time George R.R. Martin drops the next Games of Thrones book…never.
Here’s the real lie underneath it:
“If I automate things, quality will drop, clients will feel it, and I’ll look dumb.”
I get it. Lawyers are paid to be accurate. The idea of a robot doing anything in your firm feels like handing a toddler your trust account login.
But the goal isn’t “AI replaces humans.”
The goal is “AI replaces the parts of your day that make you question your life choices.”
What Actually Needs to Change
Stop treating AI like a magic brain.
Treat it like a very fast assistant who needs clear instructions and a final review.
That’s the mindset shift.
AI is not your associate. It’s not your partner. It’s not your replacement.
It’s your “I don’t want to type this again” machine.
When I built a firm that didn’t depend on me doing the core legal work, it wasn’t because I was a productivity wizard. It was because I finally accepted a painful truth:
If I keep doing everything, my business isn’t a business. It’s a hostage situation.
Same thing with AI. If you use it to add new tasks, you’re just upgrading the hostage taker.
Use it to remove friction. Start with the stuff that drives you nuts first. The form motions, the consistent follow up, the double data entry. Use AI to stop having to worry about that. Honestly the only thing that drives me nuts that I haven’t figured out how to make better with AI is getting my child to go to sleep on time.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
She said this saves her about 3 minutes per email.
Obviously, not every email gets this treatment. But what if it’s 10 emails a day? That’s 30 minutes. Four days a week? Two hours a week. Fifty weeks a year? That’s more than four full days saved!!!!
You could play a LOT of disc golf with that kind of time back.
That’s the point.
Not “cool tool.” Not “innovation.” Not “let’s sprinkle AI dust on it.”
Hours back. Mental space back. Life back. Plus happier clients.
How to Start Fixing It
Here are five practical ways to use AI without turning your firm into a science fair project:
1. Create a “First Draft” Lane
Pick three things you write all the time: • Follow-up emails requesting documents • FAQ responses
• Social media copy AI writes the first draft. A human edits and sends it. You just removed the blank-page problem, which is the real villain here.
2. Turn Messy Notes Into Clean Summaries If your intake notes look like a ransom letter, mine did too, use AI to turn bullet points into:
• A clean internal case summary • A client-friendly recap • A next-steps checklist
This is where speed matters and perfection comes from review.
3. Build a “Weekly Meeting” Prep Bot
Weekly meetings are sacred because they prevent the week from becoming an improvised jazz solo. Use AI to: • Summarize last week’s wins and stuck points
• Create an agenda draft • Suggest the top three priorities based on pending tasks You still lead. AI just sets the table.
4. Automate the “Where Is That Thing?” Problem AI is great at searching and summarizing if your systems are decent.
If you have a knowledge base, SOPs, templates, or even a folder of “the good versions,” AI can help your team find the right document, process, or answer without every employee having to ask you like you’re a glorified Siri with more student loan debt.
5. Use AI for Marketing Support, Not Marketing Replacement AI can help outline a newsletter, generate headline options, repurpose content into posts, and draft email sequences.
But your voice matters. If your content reads like it was written by a motivational poster, your leads will feel it. Use AI to move faster. Keep the human part human.
Quick Guardrails • Don’t put sensitive client information into random tools without understanding the privacy settings
• Treat AI output like it comes from a 1L Gunner, it’s very confident but still needs fact-checking as it’s wrong sometimes. • Always review before anything goes out the door
If you do those things, AI becomes a time machine instead of a liability. And that’s the whole goal. Not to be “the AI lawyer.”
To be the lawyer who gets to have dinner without checking Slack.
Next week, we’re diving into how to step away from your firm without everything piling up, slowing down, or exploding while you’re gone. You’ll learn how to build systems your team can actually rely on, reduce dependency on you for every decision, and create enough operational stability that time off stops feeling more stressful than work itself.
Until then,
Take five minutes and list the top 10 things you do every week that feel like “copy/paste with extra suffering.” Circle the top 2. Those are your first AI experiments. Draft help only. Human review. Go.
