Look…this is mostly a selfish newsletter…if you want to avoid it, that’s fine.
However, as I have continued to share about my book, a LOT of people have asked what they can do to support it. So that is what I am writing about today (but in the context of how you can provide value to anyone…not just to me).
As you know, my book Love Your Law Firm is out and it’s about how you can create a law firm you actually enjoy owning…my personal slogan for the year is helping law firm owners run a firm they can be proud of while living a life that’s even better…this book is WAY on the first half (which means there might be a second book on the second half…regardless this newsletter and my coaching is that part too).
I started my firm about 9 years ago…and it was a WILD ride. I learned a ton in the beginning and wanted to try and give a bunch back, so 6-7 years ago, I embarked on a mission – to write a guide that would help you navigate the nebula of law firm management. The catch? I kept living the very lessons I wanted to share…and learning new lessons.
So finally I had to just pick a date…stop adding new life events and push the book out into the world.
Do I have it all figured out? No. Do I know this book can help anyone who reads it though? Yes. The stars have aligned, and the book dropped on April 1st! The culmination of YEARS of work, and truly (other than raising a kid) the HARDEST thing I have ever done.
Harder than running a firm I love. Harder than 10 years of marriage (with the right person like my wife Heather Ostroff that’s easy sometimes). Harder than running a marathon (once). Harder than 75 hard (twice). Harder than…a LOT. But here it is.
So how can you support it? Or really, how can you provide value to ANYONE you want to.
1. Buy Their Services
In this case, it would be the book. In other cases, you can support a friend’s business by buying from them. Sure this is the BIGGEST commitment, and anyone who requires you to do this to be a good friend is NOT a good friend.
And because I really don’t care about the money…while the paperback is $20, there will be a free Kindle version for the first week or so. It would mean a TON to me (and still help towards best seller status) if you at least picked up a free copy.
2. Make a Referral
The next step down from buying from someone directly, is making a referral. Sure, I don’t have any medical malpractice issues (that I know of), but I know who to send those leads to when my PI firm gets them.
Maybe you have it all figured out, but you know a friend, colleague, or mentor who might benefit from a copy of the book (or someone’s service).
3. Tell the World
If you don’t know a specific person to make a referral (thanks Stacey Brown Randall for that clarification on what referral are or are not), you can share the message with your audience.
That could be by making or sharing a social media post, sending some info out to your email list, having the person on your podcast or live show.
Things like that can have a HUGE impact on moving the needle for anyone you want to support.
If you’re willing to do any of that for me and my book I would be super honored. If not, I get it, we all get hit up for things constantly…hopefully you know me better than everyone on LinkedIn who sends one message and thinks I will recommend their product or service.
4. Make an Intro
Maybe you don’t have a huge audience or a live show…but maybe you know someone who does. Oftentimes when legal vendors ask me for things the best thing I can do is connect them with some of the amazing vendors I know who do have those great platforms and see what happens from there.
The biggest thing I learned from having a live show for so many years is that I was just as happy to have a great guest as they were to be on the show. It’s always weird how those things can work out so well for everyone.
5. Write a Review
This one is weird…honestly, don’t do it if you haven’t read the book or had a real experience with it.
But when it comes to your referral sources, if you’ve sent over multiple clients and all of them are happy…I think you can add that to a review. It helps when it overlaps with your work (like I have not been a patient of many of the medical offices we work with…I know the ones who do an amazing job for our clients and make sure they feel better AND get a better recovery…) I think that meets the standard for Google’s TOS.
This isn’t just a book; it’s a piece of my heart and soul, a guide built through years of legal adventures, ready to be shared with the world. Let’s make law firm management not just successful, but enjoyable – together.
Until then, may your legal journey be as epic as a saga in a galaxy far, far away!
