What do the original iPhone launch, the “This is fine” dog sitting in a burning room, and a law firm owner who keeps saying “I’ll do marketing once I catch up” have in common?

It’s not that all three are powered by caffeine, anxiety, and vibes. Instead, it’s about finding… No… MAKING time to market while you’re drowning in operations.

Apple didn’t launch the iPhone by “finding time” for marketing after they cleaned up internal chaos. They made the launch, the mission, and everything else had to fall in line behind it.

The dog in that meme… Well let me tell you, everything is not fine. And it will stay not fine if you stop marketing. But many firm owners do the opposite. They let ops run the calendar, then wonder why marketing feels like Peter Parker trying to take a vacation while still being Spiderman AND getting paid to take photos of himself.

The Lie We Tell Ourselves

“I can’t market until operations are under control.”

That sounds responsible. It sounds mature. It sounds like something a person with their life together would say.

It is also the sentence that keeps your firm stuck.

Because ops is a gas. It expands to fill the container.

If your container is your entire week, client matters will happily occupy all of it and still request (unpaid) overtime.

What Actually Needs to Change

Marketing is not “extra.”

Marketing is future operations.

If you don’t market, your future calendar gets decided by:

Slow months, Panic, Random referral droughts, And whatever the algorithm feels like doing that week. So the shift is this:

Stop trying to earn marketing time by being “caught up.”

Start protecting marketing time like it’s a statute of limitations deadline and if you don’t protect those well enough, well that’s another newsletter.

Because if marketing is optional, it won’t happen; like another Firefly movie. Client emergencies (like the movie studio) will make sure of that.
