Gratitude Beyond Thanksgiving: The Power of Saying Thanks

I love Thanksgiving, and I hope you had a great one!

There you go, that's the newsletter...

No, I kid, I kid.

For the last few months, every night at dinner, my family says three things we are grateful for and one thing we could have done better from the day. And look, my wife and I are close (living in a 700 ft apartment while we dated, and then 13 months in a Jeep Cherokee will do that). But I've never felt closer to my son than this time.

It's CRAZY to hear what a 4.5-year-old likes or thinks he could have done better - (he tends to be grateful for snacks and toys or trips to children's museums and usually admits he could have listened better).

Now that we are home, I want to ensure we don't lose this habit. Because if we REALLY think about it, we often don't take any time to think positive thoughts like this.

  • We don't get out of the car after a long drive and give thanks for arriving safely without traffic.
  • We don't send a thank you card to the car dealership after they get our oil change done in the time window they said it would happen
  • We don't usually call a friend and just check on them and tell them we are proud of them (in a non-patronizing way)

Thanksgiving is often the only time we REALLY focus on this. And while it's normal, I don't suggest waiting to give thanks.

There was a judge I was in front of as an ASA who had a great quote "life is a grindstone, but whether it polishes you up or grinds you down is up to you."

And oftentimes, a little thanks, gratitude, and/or celebration of the small stuff goes a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way.

  • In Tiny Habits, Bj Fogg will tell you that celebration helps lock in habits
  • In Atlas of the Heart, Brene Brown goes into the research on what emotions truly are and how they impact us
  • In Go-Giver (really anything he's written), Bob Burg explains how much more we get when we give true appreciation.

And in this weekly newsletter, Jordan Ostroff will tell you - life is a lot more FUN when you stop keeping score (or keep score about how much you can do for others).

So let me start here - THANK YOU!

  • For reading this.
  • For connecting with me.
  • For being the kind of firm owner who gives a shit about your clients and trying to constantly be better for them. You rock!

The incredibly honest and helpful feedback I get from these musings truly keeps me looking forward to writing each newsletter...and I have no one to thank for that but you!

So here's my ask - buy our $4,000,000 package discounted to $97 for black Friday...kidding again - but seriously, take some time to thank the people who deserve your thanks and appreciation.

Whether it leads to more business, a better connection, or just because it's the RIGHT thing to do, it WILL make you happy!

Next week I will be sharing more top tips on productivity, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a chance to say thanks!

Until then, may you enjoy all the leftover Turkey and maybe some World Cup games!

Until Next Friday
